Cosy Computing

06. Wooden go..

So now we get to the question of what this thing is going to look like. I'm really happy with the clunky retro-future black set-up, so Im going to keep that as one way of doing things. But for this project, it's a bit too threatening. This is in the visual context of a friendly fete, so shonky plas-tech is going to be a bit of a visual bruise. As would my personal favourite computer aesthetic of cold-war beige. I'll save that one for another time.

This is the room we are going to be in..

Whatever I make, I want it to be friends with this place. To belong. And to feel kind of cosy and welcoming - but of course also a bit alien and magic at the same time. With the previous fete games, I went for a WI aesthetic with a bit of an underworld riptide. For this, I keep thinking about the families I see at local military re-enactment shows. The combination of wartime hardware and cosy camping appeals to me greatly. Personal collections, tinkering and interesting things in sheds. Something kind of rough but friendly setting up camp in this handsome hall and feeling excited to be there. I had a thought about wood, and did some digging around for wooden peripherals. You can get some gorgeous handmade stuff, but it is very expensive, and Id be worried about it just getting bashed to bits as part of an interaction. So I've just been keeping hunting and got a couple of bargains..

And I had a voucher to get a new case for the Pi, so I've gone for this lovely wooden one that also means you can see inside, and it has holes for camera and GPIO cables, which will be essential when I develop this further.

And I've started assembling boxes and bits to build the aesthetic.

So it will begin to take shape visually from now, too..
